The sudden burst of warm weather has given the perfect conditions for the population of ticks to explode. The parasites, which were once confined to East Gippsland, have now spread to the surrounding areas and even into inner suburbs St Kilda, Brighton, Prahran, East Melbourne and Moonee Ponds.

Vet Bill Ryan sees them even in his inner-city practice. “We’ve had six or seven cases of ticks and we’ve had several deaths.”

Even dogs who have never left home are getting infected. Such cases pose a great threat not only to family pets, but also to humans, especially children.
